Barista Battle: Dupont Circle

I have an addiction. Well, probably two. The first is coffee - but you already knew that. My other addiction is far more exciting and probably a little (or a lot) healthier. I am addicted to the Yola PB&J smoothie. Sometimes I even have two in one day. It's really quite embarrassing, but no one can deny the goodies that come in a smoothie...almond milk, greek yogurt, blueberries, peanut butter, bananas...I could make the smoothie at home but it's a mess and I can't remember the last time I stepped foot in a grocery store for something other than milk and bread. That's why Yola is my new favorite cafe in Dupont Circle.

Yola beat out several other cafes in this week's Barista Battle (namely, KramerBooks and Java House). It didn't win because of the coffee - though Yola coffee is pretty awesome (especially the espresso!!)...instead, it ran to the top of the charts because of the amazing yogurt options. You can make your own parfait for a reasonable price and the guarantee that you will always get the highest quality ingredients. Or, like me, you can go for the smoothie because it tastes incedible and it's easier to walk through the city with. For those of you who don't like yogurt parfaits or smoothies (weirdos!), you can opt for oatmeal with fresh fruit, dried fruit, nuts, etc. My favorite oatmeal additions: blueberries, almonds and honey  - DELISH!!

The look and feel of Yola is something that deserves attention as well. It's a quirky little cafe with two entrances (one on Constitution and one on 18th street). The walls are decorated with simple designs that remind me of childhood. While I have never stayed at Yola for more than a few minutes, there are plenty of tables toward the back of the cafe (18th street side) and I always see a few people working away on their laptops. It seems cozy.

Yola was founded by a father daughter team who came up with the concept over dinner (see their website, they tell you all about it). Also, you can find their regular menu and catering menu at http://www.yoladc.com/

Yola is south of Dupont Circle at 1323 Connecticut Ave., NW but can also be accessed through the 18th street entrance.
