Weeks too late, President Obama finally told the man who is responsible for terrorizing and murdering thousands of his own people to pack his stuff and move on out. Moments later, the rest of western Europe made the same announcement - Dear Assad, Get Out! But why so late? and why so little?
There's a strategy there. The Syrian revolution is fueled with frustration and anger but lacks organization and power. When Assad finally decides to leave (and I doubt it will be any time soon), who will take his place? This is a question that Obama and the rest of the world have been asking for weeks. If you oust the awful leader without intervening militarily, then how do you prevent an extremist dictator from stepping up behind Assad?
Obama isn't going to send in the troops. Instead, he is cutting off economic resources to the Assad regime by prohibiting trade and encouraging other countries to do the same. What does this do for the people of the country? Will this be more burdensome to the citizens of Syria than to their dictator? Perhaps.
We will see what happens with Syria. They have a dark road ahead of them but hopefully 10 years from now we will see a prosperous, somewhat democratic government with active citizens who don't fear their lives...here's to hoping...
